The best fish and chips in Powys ranked on national celebration day

The biggest day in the fish and chip calendar is back today.

National Fish and Chip Day has gone from strength to strength since its launch in 2015 and despite the restrictions, nearly 50 million people would have seen, heard or read about the awareness day last year.

Organisers, the National Edible Oil Distributors’ Association (NEODA) said: “We want to celebrate this amazing industry who are at the centre of every community and who have, when able to do so safely, kept us fed, and when that wasn’t possible kept us all safe by remaining closed at great sacrifice to their business.

“So let’s make National Fish and Chip Day 2021 the best yet as NEODA brings together everyone involved in creating this iconic British dish; from Fish & Chip shops, pub chains, restaurants, retailers, to the fishermen and farmers who provide the sustainable and natural ingredients needed to create this family favourite.”

So to mark the day we have drawn up a mouthwatering list of the top chippies in Powys area, as rated by users of Tripadvisor.

“We called here on a trip up from South Wales to do some walking. We’ve noticed the sign a few times over the years as we have passed through Caersws and as we did not know what would be open in our destination we decided to stop en-route for some food here. It will definitely not be the last time – absolutely delicious food!”

“This is our chippy of choice travelling from Newtown for three chips. Tried the special flamin’ fish burger but without the chroizo and it was amazing. The guacamole was obviously “home made” & seriously the best I’ve ever had, brioche bun toasted to perfection, with a perfectly moist mini fish inside. Served with the nicest chips as always. Never been disappointed with the service or food from here – highly recommend this place.”

Evans’ Fish Bar, Llanidloes – 4.5/ – 134 reviews

“The very best fish and chips in ALL of the United Kingdom!! Yum Yum. I really enjoyed the chips and mushy peas the best anywhere around.”

“Central chip shop, quick nice food, exactly what we needed after climbing Cadair Idris. Service was friendly, recommendations were given from the staff and COVID restrictions were in place. £8 for large chips, two jumbo sausages and two pots of curry sauce. Would return if and when in the area again.”

The Fish Bar, Llandrindod Wells – 5/2 – 22 reviews

“Flavoursome, large portions served very quickly. Friendly servers at the best takeaway in town ; on a nice night there is a pine picnic table on the pavement outside. If you want picturesque and tablecloths not the place for you but if you have worked up a hunger on a nature trail, cycle run or a hike this is for you. Value for money and guaranteed quality. Our local. You know what they say eat where the locals eat. Choose here.”

“Another great visit to the fish bar ,the staff are always great ,very friendly and jolly make their customers feel welcome and give a great service. Their food is great it doesn’t stick to the paper like from a lot of other chip shops, you can eat all your food without half of it being left stuck on the paper.

“I love the southern fried chicken the meat comes off the bone so easily no waste. Service in the fish bar is very good as they always have plenty of staff so you never have to wait too long, their prices are very good too.

“This place should receive an award for their food and their service they really take some beating and they have a lot of different items too offer on their menu board.”
